Canada's 1Q furnishings sales up 8.9%

OTTAWA — Statistics Canada said sales of home furnishings and electronics in Canada grew 8.9% in the first quarter to C$4.7 billion.
The largest sales gains were for telephones and home office electronics, excluding computers, up 25%; mattresses and foundations, up 16.9%; and computers, related equipment and software, up 15.1%.
StatsCan reported that 87.2% of all home furnishings and electronics sold in the first quarter were sold by full-line furniture retailers, furniture specialists and home electronics specialists.
In total, Canadian consumers purchased C$61.8 billion worth of goods and services from stores in the first quarter, up 4.1% over last year's period.
