Friedman, Weiman teaming up for clean, contemporary line
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, September 30, 2001
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Award-winning contemporary designer Stanley Jay Friedman is making his first foray into residential home furnishings at this month's High Point market with a line of upholstery, accessories and case goods for The Weiman Co.
Friedman, who has done mostly contract work, describes the collection as "simple, pure and clean."
"We are delighted that Stanley Jay Friedman has made the decision to work with Weiman on this new collection," said Jac denBoer, Weiman's vice president of sales and marketing. "Mr. Friedman made this decision after many refusals to participate with other manufacturers in the residential, contemporary furniture field."
Offerings in the Stanley Jay Friedman Collection include sofas, chairs, sectionals, a chaise, tables and tabletop accessories. Pricing will be at the upper end of Weiman's line.
Friedman will be at the Weiman showroom, International Home Furnishings Center D901, Oct. 15-20.
The collection includes three styles: Tranquility, Repose and Serenity. The upholstery will be shown in red, white and black, but will be available in the entire Weiman cover line.
The signature piece in the Tranquility group is a two-part sofa that is 12 feet long and is designed for the body's natural contours. The upholstery, set well off the floor, has satin steel legs and unusually shaped throw pillows. Woods in the group are natural maple, with complementary red wool flannel. A chaise, bench and chair complement the sofa, which will be shown in red.
The Repose group includes a low-slung sofa suspended on a satin steel bridge. It is accented by the Serendipity table, a multi-tiered wood design.
Serenity features an elevated sofa with a satin steel leg. Other pieces include a chair, ottoman, chaise sectional and a group of tables, including rectangular and square coffee tables.
"In a contemporary world, we have a responsibility to live a contemporary life, one that includes the natural order and allows for a relaxed, natural state," said Friedman. "My collection for Weiman represents just that. It is simple, pure and clean. It shows beautifully in a single fabrication, which is a luxury in the world of design interiors."
Friedman's awards include the DuPont Antron Grand Prize, the Roscoe Award (10 times) and the ASID Interior Design Award (twice), among others.
