Industry leaders share feelings, offer support for relief efforts

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 30, 2001

In the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedies, many industry leaders have sent messages to their employees or customers to share their feelings or encourage support for relief efforts. These letters are from two retail executives, Jeff Seaman of Rooms To Go and Doug Kays of Premiere Home Furnishings.

'At Rooms To Go, you can be sure, we'll do what we can'

Last Tuesday was one day that we will never forget. Like most of you, I was transfixed by the horror of what was unfolding on television.

As someone who grew up in New York, the World Trade Center always seemed to me to be such a powerful symbol of New York City and the United States. I have visited the World Trade Center dozens of times, and have marveled at their sheer size and elegance. It is hard to believe that they were so easily destroyed. Worse, of course, is the tremendous loss of the innocent lives and brave rescue workers.

I know I speak for the 5,000 employees of Rooms To Go and Key West, that we are united in our resolve to help. I'm sure you're as proud as I am of Bobby Van Ryan and Ira Greenspon, from our Vero Beach store, who recognized a suspect's photo on the news and tipped off the FBI.

As for the many Rooms To Go employees who are reservists being called up, you'll know what you have to do and we wish you good luck, safety and success. For the rest of us, who want to do something to help and support our country, here are some of my thoughts:

  1. Give blood —I plan to organize a company blood drive in the near future.

  2. Donate money —Rooms To Go will donate $250,000 to the American Red Cross, $50 for each of our 5,000 associates.

  3. Work, play, spend —Do your part to keep the economy from sagging; let nobody intimidate us into changing our way of life.

  4. Remember that this is a country built upon civil liberties and unyielding religious tolerance.

At Rooms To Go, you can be sure, we'll do what we can.

'Love, support and solidarity'

We hereby declare our belief in democracy, freedom and the American way of life. We offer our support to the people of the United States and declare with full pride and without embarrassment that we believe in America and the standards upon which she was founded.

We invite all area citizens and businesses to join in this support by rallying around the flag. We will be hanging American flags along the outside and inside of our stores to show our unwavering support for the United States of America. Each flagpole will be adorned with a single black ribbon bow in memory of the people who lost their lives in the heinous Sept. 11 attacks, and a white ribbon to show our support for the families of those victims.

We encourage all citizens and businesses of this area to join us in this testimony of love, support and the solidarity of the American people.
