Former owners buy back Aspen Furniture
By Gary James -- Furniture Today, October 7, 2001
Phoenix — Rick and Robert MacMillan have purchased all the assets of bankrupt manufacturer Aspen Furniture, buying back a company they sold to B.G. Affiliates, a Boston-based investor group, in November 1997.
Aspen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August. The new company will be called Aspen Furniture Designs, and will continue to make home office, home entertainment and bedroom furniture at its 400,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution facility here.
The company also runs an import program, which the MacMillans aim to expand.
At the October market, Aspen's introductions will include additions to the Vintage Oak traditional collection, a Mission-style home office and entertainment collection, and a new "inventory flow" program. The company, which has annual sales in the range of $50 million, shows in space M604 of the International Home Furnishings Center.
"I am very excited to be back in the furniture business full time," said Rick MacMillan, president of the new company. Robert MacMillan will serve as president of Oak Canyon, Aspen's manufacturing arm.
"The new company will be a price/value provider of casual contemporary, Mission and traditional products," said Rick MacMillan about the new owners' strategy.
Stan Sapp, the former president, will continue to serve in a consulting capacity "with emphasis in the import arena to help ensure a smooth transition," MacMillan said. Dave Heard and Jim Dobbins, who serve as vice presidents of sales, remain in those positions.
