Lexington closing N.C. wood plant
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 7, 2001
Lexington, N.C. — Full-line manufacturer and importer Lexington Home Brands said it will close its case goods plant in Spruce Pine, N.C., a move it hopes will allow remaining factories to run at full capacity.
Lexington will move production now done in Spruce Pine to plants in Davie and Davidson counties in North Carolina.
The plant closure will allow Lexington to focus production and delivery and control costs, said Bob Stec, president and chief executive officer.
"We believe that a balanced strategy that includes domestic products, imported components and imported products is the best way to meet the demands of the marketplace, delivering superior, branded products with great quality in a timely manner," Stec said.
"By running the remaining plants at full capacity we can deliver better quality at lower costs," he said. "This move will allow remaining plants to run at a higher capacity, which will allow many employees who have experienced a reduction in work schedules to return to more full-time work hours."
The company will lay off the 296 workers at Spruce Pine over the next two months and will continue the affected workers' benefits for a minimum of two months.
