Modus boosts plant capacity

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. — Case goods maker Modus Furniture International has added a second line and a third flat-line finishing system to the plant it owns in Indonesia. The added capacity went on line in July.
"We've always invested in the plant, but now it's machinery, production systems and the type of capacity necessary for growing in the U.S. market," said Jay Jewett, general manager. "We stepped up the number of containers we can ship from 70 a month to more than 100."
The new case goods line covers 75,100 square feet and the new finishing line 57,450 square feet.
That brings the plant, which employs over 2,300 people, to 975,600 square feet.
Modus services distributors such as Kemp Enterprises and makes private-label product for such retailers as JCPenney, The Bombay Company, Z Gallerie and Pottery Barn.
The company also is looking to boost sales of its own designs to retailers via direct containers and a warehousing program. Modus has a 30,000-square-foot warehouse here.
About 80% of its business is adult bedroom and the rest juvenile bedroom and cribs. President Oliver Wong launched Modus 16 years ago, selling platform and standard beds to futon and bedding stores.
The company shows in space M930 of the International Home Furnishings Center.
