By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 7, 2001
San Diego — Herbert Haimsohn, who worked in his family's retail business, Modern Furniture Co., the predecessor of Lawrance Contemporary Home Furnishings, has died. He was 79.
Haimsohn ran Modern Furniture, founded in 1937 by his father, Herman, in the 1940s and '50s. He left in 1954 and became a pioneer in home center retailing. He helped start discount chain Fed-Mart, where he ran the furniture department and was a company executive, and later founded Handyman, a home center chain.
Modern was renamed Lawrance Contemporary after Herbert Haimsohn left. His brother, Edward, is now chief executive officer and Edward's son, Howard, is president. Other survivors of Herbert Haimsohn include two sons and a daughter.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Assn.
