Cantrex, Mega set Quebec City activities
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, September 9, 2001
QUEBEC CITY — Groupe Cantrex and Mega Group B.V. will have strong presences at this weekend's furniture market here.
Bernard St. Charles, Cantrex vice president and general manager of its Quebec furniture and appliances division, said the buying group will hold its annual conference on the Monday of the show, showcasing a number of its newest retail solutions.
Some 80 to 100 member stores are expected to attend the market. "We've always been active in the shows in Quebec," St. Charles said. "Not that many of my dealers want to go to Toronto in June."
Cantrex will introduce several of its concepts to the Quebec market, including Appliance Expert, an electronics program, and a re-engineered Le Meubleur, its full-line furniture store banner for Quebec.
"We want to tell retailers, 'We have solutions'," St. Charles said.
Benoit Simard, vice president/Quebec for Mega Group, said the Quebec City market is becoming increasingly important for retailers in the province.
"It's a good venue for French-speaking retailers," he said. "We'll have about 30 of our member stores out, roughly what we had last year."
While Mega won't have any formal meetings — they've just ended their fall meeting in Toronto — the group will host a social on Sunday night.
Both St. Charles and Simard said Quebec members haven't been setting business records recently, but they are confident the pace will pick up as the year marches on and turns.
"It hasn't been a banner year; the last three months have been sluggish," St. Charles said. "But we're beginning to see a bit of an upswing. We're coming out with some strong promotions and we're going to be ready for the business that's out there."
Simard pointed out that housing starts are strong, interest rates remain affordable and unemployment is low. "Multi Meubles (Mega's major Quebec banner) will have a strong year next year, beginning with the fourth quarter this year," he said.
