DMI discontinuing promo BR line

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 9, 2001

Wood furniture producer and importer DMI Furniture is discontinuing production of its Dolly Madison promotional bedroom line, permanently laying off about 70 employees at Plant No. 12 in Huntingburg, Ind.

The company will continue to use Plant No. 12 to produce an expanded line of commercial office furniture.

"The market for domestically produced, fully assembled, promotionally priced bedroom furniture has been on a steady decline for several years and it's reached a point where we believe it is no longer an economically viable business," said Don Dreher, chairman and chief executive officer.

"We continue to be bullish on the outlook for our commercial office furniture business and will soon begin to ramp up production of four new groups that were introduced at the NeoCon office furniture show in June," he said.

DMI expects to record a charge of about $650,000 in its fourth fiscal quarter ended Sept. 1 in connection with the move.

A vertically integrated manufacturer, importer and marketer of residential and commercial office furniture, DMI operates five manufacturing plants in Indiana and sourcing facilities in Asia and South America. The company's divisions include DMI Office Furniture (commercial office), DMI Desk Co. (home office), Wynwood Furniture (upscale dining, bedroom and occasional) and Home Styles (casual lifestyle furniture).

The company has made the Dolly Madison line of promotional bedroom furniture since 1911. The line was focused on the $299 to $499 retail price point range for a four-piece group.
