FIDX to discuss bar codes Sept. 20
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 9, 2001
HIGH POINT — The Furniture Industry Data Exchange group will meet Sept. 20 to discuss bar code standards and other electronic document standards issues. The meeting will be in Charlotte, N.C., at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Anyone interested in attending can register online at www.fidx.org.
Also on the agenda are Manoj Nigam from software company Exim Technologies, who will present work done on the "envelope" used to send data and documents, and Rick Killam of Thomasville Furniture, who will discuss order status inquiry and report standards.
Many agree that bar code standardization would be a critical breakthrough for the industry. Many manufacturers use proprietary bar code systems that are unique to each company.
"A serial bar code standard would be great for our industry," said Jeff Baker, an executive committee member of FIDX, which is an ad hoc, pan-industry group working to establish data standards. "It would allow a piece of furniture to be traced back anywhere in the world."
Baker said use of a standardized and serialized bar code system — which is in place in the appliance industry, for example — could start on a test basis by the end of the year.
