Lane plans 500,000-sq.-ft. Miss. distribution center

TUPELO, Miss. — Lane Furniture Inds., which recently merged its case goods and upholstery divisions, plans to build a 500,000-square-foot distribution center south of Tupelo.
The facility will handle Lane case goods, occasional and cedar chests imported from the Far East. The company is closing its case goods plants in Altavista and Rocky Mount, Va., and moving production offshore.
When the center is completed, expected at the end of the first quarter of 2002, Lane said, it will conclude the liquidation of the Virginia facilities. All operations will be based in Mississippi.
"The consolidation will provide the company with a complete assortment of furniture and a tremendous growth opportunity in an industry that has been recently hard hit by the economic slowdown," said Tom Foy, president and chief executive officer.
The distribution center will be located in Monroe County at the intersection of U.S. 45 South and State Highway 41 West. The company said the site was selected after evaluating several locations in Mississippi and in other states.
