HIGH POINT — The Furniture Discovery Center here has received a gift from Rachel Hunziker in memory of her late husband, Don Hunziker. She donated 544 shares of La-Z-Boy stock with an estimated value of $10,000.
"Mrs. Hunziker's gift is one that is greatly appreciated not only because of its financial value, but also because Mr. Hunziker was the consummate furniture industry executive," said Dawn Brinson, FDC executive director. "His family's gift honors the work the center does on behalf of the industry he so loved."
While president of Lea Furniture in 1981, Hunziker and others bought Lea, American Drew and Daystrom from Sperry and Hutchinson, creating Ladd, which subsequently acquired other furniture makers and ultimately became part of La-Z-Boy.
Hunziker was president of the Southern Furniture Manufacturer's Assn. and director emeritus of the American Furniture Manufacturer's Assn. He was given the Distinguished Service Award by AFMA, was named Chief Executive of the Year by Financial World magazine, and was inducted into the American Furniture Hall of Fame in 1999.
