ASHEBORO, N.C. — Supplier B&H Panel Co. has received a U.S. patent for a new promotional medium-density fiberboard bed rail product.
The distinctive feature of the bed rail is a steel rivet used in the metal industry that B&H applied to wood furniture by riveting the bed hook into the MDF.
"Tests were very successful in-house, as well as at North Carolina State University's furniture facility and Purdue University's engineering research testing facility," said Herb Mitchell, president of B&H Panel. "We then went to market, with Bassett Furniture and Lea Inds. using the new product on select suites."
B&H Panel also has developed an automated machine to apply the patented process. A patent is pending on the machine.
The new bed rails, equipped with industry standard bed hooks, will work with any standard head and footboard, according to the company. The bed rails are available wrapped in paper, vinyl or wood veneer.
The company also now offers a good-better-best product line to go with its patented metal telescoping slat system, which allows a box of 82-inch bed rails to work with a king or queen bed.
