Shapely Shaker, milder Mission

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 14, 2001

Remember the "lifestyle" wave a couple of years ago, with a slew of collections in light maple or ash with pewter hardware and lines reminiscent of Mission or Shaker? Don't look now, but that look's style cousins is making the rounds again this week, in a more imaginative approach than before. In the product shown here, manufacturers are taking the clean purity of Mission and Shaker and adding a softer feel with rounded edges, curved lines and more finish variety. Exhibitors hope a more imaginative approach will give the category new legs at retail.

MISSION IN MIND - FOUR HANDS' Sultan collection armchair in solid teak has a Mission-inspired back softened by curves that add comfort along with a style twist.
THROWING A CURVE Flared shapes and an espresso finish put a modern spin on the Shaker-tinged lines of the Tribeca bedroom from Arbek.
PUNCHING UP SHAKER American Drew's Gatherings added visual interest to a clear cherry story, a Shaker standard, through contrasting bronze hardware and marquetry inlay.
SOFTER SIDE The Adina sofa by La-Z-Boy is an interpretation of the popular wood-base Retro look currently riding high in the stationary upholstery market. The cover is Culp's Woolly Bully.
EASED EDGES Fuller, more rounded forms blend with craftsman features like exposed dovetail joints on bases and true joinery plugs in KELLER'S American Restoration collection in solid white oak.
