Lifestyle transitions

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 14, 2001

Lifestyle, all the rage a couple of years ago, re-emerges in two versions this month, with the incarnation on this page recalling the original category's lighter wood finishes. For form, however, this new theme relies more on transitional shapes rather than the Shaker and Mission lines from before. Hardware gets a lot of attention here, adding a jewelry touch to simpler, often almost contemporary case shapes. Finishes have some depth, but are clear enough to allow wood patterns to shine through, adding motion to relatively simple structures.

ACCESSORIZED DECO - STANLEY'S Quintessence collection recalls Art Deco styles from the 1920s. Bracelet hardware adds an ornamental touch to primavera and burl veneers.
YOUNG AT HEART Owen Street, the first rendition of Lexington's new brand Haley & Carter, has a very light honey finish with wax accents and bleached undertones on oak and hardwood solids and quartered oak veneers.
BACK TO THE FUTURE The Centennial chair, offered in leather or fabric, is an update of a 100-year-old chair that norwalk displayed at market.
SCARLET SIREN - Elite Leather offers sweeping flare arms matched with wood legs to further enhance this refined sculptured base.
QUILTED COLOR Fashion and function are fused to good effect in this quilted-block leather chest from ClassicTraditions. Retail, $685. Cover is Friitala's Designer's Choice.
RELAXED REFINEMENT Oak and mixed media predominate in the Ovations collection from pennsylvania House, accented with hardware in a hand-woven pattern for a casual, modern feel.
