Retailer Dekor closes

ATLANTA — ATLANTA — Dekor, the high-concept home store which opened less than a year ago, has closed. Three stores in the Atlanta area shut last week; a fourth in Douglasville, Ga., closed last month.
Founded by former Home Depot executives Herb Biggers and Jim Inglis, Dekor combined an upscale product mix with middle-class affordability. The flagship store was in Atlanta's affluent Buckhead section.
Inglis is credited with developing the Home Expo concept for Home Depot a decade ago.
Dekor, billed as the store for "recovering do-it-yourselfers," combined elements of furniture, appliances, home accent, floor covering and big-box linen stores. It offered decorating and installation services through local interior designers and installers.
The store is assuring consumers that contracts will be honored.
Undercapitalization and a slowing of consumer spending seemed to be the double-whammy that put Dekor under.
"I think they had financial issues for some time," said Paul D'huyvetter, senior vice president and general manager of Oriental Weavers USA, a Dekor rug vendor. "The store was conceived when consumers were spending and confidence was high. But in today's climate, it looks like the money ran out."
Dekor executives have declined to comment on financial arrangements.
