Bill Peterson, Furniture/Today founding editor, dies

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Founding Furniture/Today editor Wilbert Paul "Bill" Peterson died Sept. 16 from complications following a heart attack at his home here. He was 73.
Memorials may be made to the Bill Peterson Scholarship Fund, newly established at High Point University's Furniture Marketing Program, University Station, Montlieu Ave., High Point, N.C. 27262, or to the American Diabetes Assn., 1207 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27403.
A celebration of his life was held last week at Ebenezer Lutheran Church here, where he was a member.
Peterson received a degree in journalism from Florida Southern University and worked for several publications, including the Orlando Sentinel Star, the Melbourne Daily Times and Home Furnishings Daily.
In 1976, he joined forces with Steve Pond to launch Furniture/Today. He led the publication through its early years to a position of prominence, and participated in the founding of such sister publications as Home Textiles Today and Home Accents Today.
Peterson retired in 1991, although he continued to write a column and attend major furniture markets and other industry events.
He received numerous industry honors, including the Pillar of the Industry Award and the Distinguished Home Furnishings Journalism Award, and was inducted into the Furniture Writers Hall of Fame.
Peterson is survived by his wife Bonnie, an industry marketing communications consultant and writer; a daughter, Laurel Peterson, regional training director in Atlanta for Havertys; two sons, including Mark Peterson, a photographer and studio manager for Albion Associates in High Point; six grandchildren and three sisters.
