Leon's renovates flagship

TORONTO — Leon's Furniture has renovated its flagship store here, part of the No. 3-ranked Canadian furniture retailer's ongoing expansion and capital improvement program.
The 200,000-square-foot warehouse showroom complex in the suburb of Weston features an expanded Platinum Gallery, Leon's foray into higher-end bedroom, living room and dining room furniture. The full-line store also places greater emphasis on home theater and electronics.
Platinum Gallery debuted last year at Leon's renovated store in the nearby Toronto suburb of Scarborough. The revamped Weston store has many of the same interior features as Scarborough. The store in Edmonton, Alberta, will undergo a similar renovation in the near future.
Terry Leon, senior vice president and chief financial officer, said the company was "really pleased" with Platinum Gallery's performance, which includes increased accessory sales. "We're going to expand it to both new and existing stores," he said.
Leon's also has opened a store in Red Deer, Alberta, and is looking to expand its presence in that province by adding stores in both Calgary and Edmonton. Ontario also is a prime market for expansion, with a new store in the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake set to open later this year.
Leon's will expand while remaining debt free. "We're fortunate in that we're well capitalized," Leon said. "And in tough times, we look to capture increased market share."
He said business has been quite tough in recent months, but that opportunities remain. "If the economy went completely in the tank, we'd probably have to rethink a lot of (our expansion plans)," Leon said.
