Some events carry on; others postponed or canceled

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, September 23, 2001

HIGH POINT — Two weeks after the tragic events of Sept. 11, the industry is moving forward with several events and rescheduling or canceling some others.

In the days immediately following the plane crashes, many event coordinators were forced to cancel as airlines shut down travel and the public mourned.

  • Retail software provider Profitsystems canceled its user conference in Colorado Springs Sept. 12-15. The conference will be scheduled for sometime next year, said Brian McCarthy, Profitsystems president.

  • Software provider Storis Management Systems canceled its conference planned for Sept. 20-23 in Parsippany, N.J. Air travel to the New York metro area "could be greatly disrupted" in the short term after the attacks, officials said. Co-founders Donald Surdoval, president, and Ira Bakst, executive vice president, said the company doesn't plan to reschedule at this time.
One of the events Storis had planned was an awards banquet at Windows on the World, a restaurant on the 106th and 107th floors of a World Trade Center tower.

  • A third software provider's conference will go on as scheduled. The Furniture Retail Operations Group will meet Oct. 1-3 in Charleston, S.C. Organizers said they've had few cancellations, but several people have called to make sure the event was still on.

  • Rent-Way postponed its annual shareholders' meeting, originally set for Sept. 14 in New York City, to this Friday at the corporate office in Erie, Pa., at 10 a.m.

  • The International Casual Furniture and Accessories Market in Chicago ran Sept. 12-16, but some events were canceled and attendance was down because of travel problems.
Most of the manufacturers who participated in the market will return Oct. 5-7 for an "encore market." Winners of the Apollo Awards for excellence in casual furniture retailing will be honored at a social event on Oct. 5.

  • The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Assn. decided last week to postpone the International Juvenile Products Show in Dallas, originally set to run Oct. 5-8, for next May 3-5. The association had received some cancellations from exhibitors and retailers.

  • The New York Metro chapter of Women in the Home Industries Today (WithIt) will go ahead with its panel discussion Tuesday at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

  • The Ohio chapter of the National Home Furnishings Assn. will continue with its meeting Oct. 2 at the Columbus Marriott North in Columbus, Ohio. Industry analyst Jerry Epperson will speak.

  • Nourison and Calvin Klein Home canceled a Sept. 24 New York press conference to unveil Nourison's licensed Calvin Klein rugs. The rugs now will debut in January 2002, with a press preview sometime in the coming months.
