Youth offerings pull double-duty

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002

HIGH POINT — Youth offerings this market include several collections that could work for older kids or guesthouses.

Stanley is introducing its largest youth collection yet with Winterhaven/Summerhaven. The group is still targeted for kids although the beds have 3-inch legs and the scale is bigger than usual, said Kelly Cain, senior vice president of product development and merchandising.

Some styles translate well from one region of the country to another. However, Cain said the collection features a bead board design element widely used in furniture in many areas. Winterhaven features solid pine construction with a warm Honey Pine finish; Summerhaven has a coastal look with hardwood solids and a white "rubbed-through" finish, he said.

Stanley offers many bed options including twin, loft, captain and trundle as well as a new product for the company, a daybed. The twin bed retails for $599, daybed for $799 and bunk for $899.

The collection also includes a tall-height armoire, student activity center with bookcase, computer desk and hutch, writing desk and small television center.

Broyhill also presents a youth group with a cottage feel. Attic Heirloom appears coastal or rustic depending on the finish option. The headboard retails for $199, or the complete bed is $499. The company showed its cottage-styled bed at premarket and should have the sleigh bed ready for this market.

California case goods manufacturer Wooden Man enters the youth category with a line of interchangeable styles called Kindling. The pieces are made of hardwood solids and hardwood plywood; cases feature dovetail drawers and full-extension drawer glides. The looks range from being compatible with second rooms to whimsical.

The group has 16 designs available in a combination of 17 colors. Options include plain or beadboard style; straight, tapered or tulip feet; ball or cap finial or none at all; wood, glass or nickel knobs; butterfly or finial hinges; and appliqués of star, flower or cornucopia design.

Riverside has new pieces for Garden Gate, which has been a best-selling group since being introduced three years ago. A new arbor bed has a bonnet top over the headboard that matches an armoire and mirror. All come in a Parchment White finish.

Huppé's new collections don't have a cottage feel but do go beyond typical youth looks with contemporary styles. Malibu and Tommy are made of birch with 18 different finishes. Malibu has 17 pieces, while Tommy has 16.

This desk from Broyhill's Attic Heirloom group has a lift top and retails for $349.
