Berkline, Lane unveil glider recliners

HIGH POINT — Berkline and Lane, two heavyweights in the reclining chair category, are upgrading their glider offerings at market by unveiling several new models that both glide and recline.

The producers say the products aren't aimed specifically at major glider rocker manufacturers such as Dutailier, Brooks, Towne Square or Best Chairs, but they remain convinced there's a growing market for reclining chairs that do more than just recline.

"It's still a major part of our recliner business," said Bob Young, Lane's merchandise manager for recliners.

Lane is targeting the $499 retail price point for its new Cloud Nine glider/recliner, for example, while Berkline is targeting the same price point with three additions to its to its Easy Glide collection.

"We believe we're going to do well with this," said Rick Carskadden, vice president of merchandising for reclining chairs at Berkline. "We had great reaction at pre-market."

Unlike traditional glider rockers, the Berkline and Lane products don't have stand-alone ottomans. In fact, they could easily be mistaken for traditional rocker-recliners — except that they glide instead of rock. And step-up models often swivel as well.

"They're very comfortable," Young said of the Cloud Nine introductions. "And they fully recline."

Both companies have developed proprietary glider mechanisms for their products.
