OFMA to salute Tom Leon as top retailer

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — The Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn. has named Tom Leon, chairman of Leon's Furniture, as the first recipient of its Canadian Retailer of the Year Award.
"This recognizes his outstanding contributions to the home furnishings industry, exemplary service to his community and his personal business achievements," said Gerry Cockerill, OFMA president.
OFMA's board chose Leon after receiving nominations from throughout the Canadian industry.
"Mr. Tom," as he is widely known, will be honored at a gala dinner on Friday, May 31 in the new Aviation Ballroom at the Toronto International Center of Commerce here.
Leon's is Canada's third-largest furniture retailer. Including its 23 franchises, total sales were C$546.9 million last year. Historically, furniture, bedding and accessories have accounted for about 70% of Leon's sales. It employs over 2,000 people and has 49 stores in every province except British Columbia.
Prior to being named chairman of the board, Tom Leon served as the family-managed retailer's president and chief executive officer.
He began his career as assistant to the president, Louie Leon, his uncle. The store was founded by Tom's father, Ablan Leon.
His community service includes founding the first chapter of a group that helps children with learning disabilities, and serving as chairman of the Rouge Valley Health Center Foundation, which named its computerized library the Tom Leon Health Resources Center.
He also founded the Tom Leon Charitable Foundation, which provides for care of the sick and underprivileged, and spearheaded a fund-raising campaign for the Welland Health Center.
