100 Angels help 400 High Point families with truckload of food
By Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002
HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — On a warm, bright day last month, the furniture industry reached out and wrapped its arms around hundreds of needy families and hungry children, thanks to the 100 Angels Charitable Foundation, a philanthropic group of furniture retailers, manufacturers and sales representatives.
On Friday morning, March 15, a huge truck from international hunger relief organization Feed The Children rolled up to Market Square loaded with food and personal care items.
Members of 100 Angels, representatives from High Point Childwatch, a community service program, and members of several community groups worked to unload 800 boxes from the truck.
Throughout the day, 400 needy families who had been identified and given vouchers by Childwatch came by to receive the food and other items.
100 Angels hopes the distribution will inspire others in the industry to do the same thing in their own communities.
"A truckload like this," said Marty Libowsky, 100 Angels founder, "can be sponsored for $7,200. Suppose, for example, that several furniture stores in a community could get together to sponsor a Feed The Children food distribution. The impact would be terrific."
