The most important thing you'll check out at market
By Michael Greene -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002
Just think about it a moment. If you're out there in the market, what in the world are you doing? You're complaining about how your feet are hurtin' and how your back is achin'. Right? Right.
So-o-o, if you're already hurtin' and achin', there's one more thing you can check on without any more pain.
Forget it, Michael, you say. Enough is enough. My market menu is full and I just can't put another showroom on my list. Not a one.
Well, you're wrong.
According to the Ol' Swami here, there's one more showpiece that you can give a look-see. One that can overshadow all the other merchandise you're going to see. Trust me. Hah!
What is that merchandise? It's you.
Yes, you, John Doe. And you don't even have to take another step or shake another hand. Period.
All you have to do is set a bottle of Snapple or Lipton Ice Tea on your hotel night table, grab a pencil and pad and look over the personal merchandise that you've brought along or dragged to market. Yes, that merchandise is adorable you.
As it is written in Deuteronomy: There's a time and place for everything under the sun. And the Ol' Swami here suggests there's no better place and time than a High Point market, where you've come to discover answers for that business life of yours.
There's no more appropriate setting to check out your personal inventory (philosophy and life pattern) than a lonesome hotel room away from the constant hustle and fire-putting-out bustle that surrounds you back home.
Silly? Nope. Because the reason you're not home is because you've gone to market to find fresh merchandise, techniques, advertising ideas and staging that will make you happier when you get back.
Therefore, the old geezer here politely suggests you simply take a good look at who you are (which includes family), where you've gone, where you want to be, how you're going to do it with little bucks, how you're going to do it with your inventory of personality plus the talents you've chosen to join you.
Must you record only original thoughts? Nope. Because this search through your mind will reveal hidden treasures of past buried thoughts, plus a couple of fresh ones too.
That's it, Michael? Yes, that's it, friend. And when you get drowsy searching, drink that drink, call that somebody (or somebodies) you love and doze off with a broad smile.
Tomorrow?Change to a fresh pair of shoes, put your list into your pocket over your heart and go out for breakfast with a broad smile on your face. Because you've already checked out the most important asset of your company . . . you.
Thanks, again, for listening.
