Sofa-sleepers
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 22, 2004
Sofa-sleeper buyers generally have smaller incomes and some are coping with limited space. One-third have household incomes of less than $40,000; 14% are apartment dwellers; 6% live in a mobile home; and 8% live in a condominium.
Nearly two-fifths of buyers report the need of an extra sleeping surface as the purchase reason.
Sofa-sleepers have the highest percentage of first-time buyers among the six upholstery categories. For half of sofa-sleeper buyers, it was their first upholstery purchase.
Generation Y account for 7% of purchases — the highest percentage of Gen Y'ers buying any of the upholstery categories. Gen Y members spent a median of $475 on their purchase. Generation X account for nearly one-fifth of buyers and spent a median of $699.
The shopping process is short for sofa-sleepers. More than half of buyers shopped for less than a month before buying one, and another quarter shopped for one to three months.
