Smith sleeper features Serta

WACO, Texas — Upholstery maker Smith Furniture is offering a line of sofa-sleepers with Serta innerspring mattresses.
President Harry Smith said his company signed a licensing agreement with the major bedding maker just before the October market but didn't have time to get a promotion under way.
"We basically introduced the line at the first of the year," he said. "We're pre-selling it and have gotten a pretty good response. The company just turned 65 and we thought this was a good way to celebrate our anniversary."
Twenty frames are offered with Serta mattresses. The starting sleepers, which retail at $599, are available with twin, full and queen mattresses. Others fall between $649 and $799 retail. A lifetime cushion warranty is standard on all.
Smith Furniture has other sofa-sleepers in its line, but this is the first premium mattress the company has offered.
Smith's 92-year-old uncle, Milton Smith, recently decided to close Economy Furniture, an upholstery operation he owned in Austin, Texas, but continues to operate Dormae, a mattress factory he owns that makes Serta product.
"We started buying the mattresses from him," Harry Smith said. "We had to get permission from Serta. What's kind of neat is that we can still buy things from him and keep that part of the business alive."
Smith said the arrangement allows the company to offer a super value to its dealers. "In today's world, $599 is a hot (retail) price point for a living room sleeper with a premium innerspring in it," he said.
