Mattress Giant, vendors linked via FurnishNet

ADDISON, Texas — Top 5 bedding retailer Mattress Giant has connected with its vendors through FurnishNet's Internet-based transaction management system.
With over 250 stores in 14 states, Mattress Giant has begun electronically processing purchase orders and other transaction documents via the Internet. When fully implemented, the chain will be able to process more than 95% of its transactions, FurnishNet said.
Vendors linked to Mattress Giant via FurnishNet include Simmons, Serta, Spring Air, King Koil, Kingsdown, Fashion Bed Group and Leggett & Platt.
The linkage was prompted by problems associated with manual printing and faxing of purchase orders and keying in acknowledgements and invoices, said Steve Williams, senior vice president and chief information officer for Mattress Giant, based in Addison.
The chain was incurring high overtime costs to meet suppliers' early-order cutoff times, suffering from unreadable faxes, busy lines, missing faxes and fax hardware failures, he said.
Mattress Giant picked FurnishNet rather than traditional electronic data interchange because, Williams said, the chain "didn't have to build an IT infrastructure to maintain all the document mapping for each of our vendors."
Meanwhile, Levitz Home Furnishings Inc., parent of retailers Levitz and Seaman's, has selected FurnishNet to automate the ordering of parts from its suppliers.
FurnishNet's Web-based parts management service will provide connectivity to Levitz' top 15 vendors, who deliver more than 60% of the chain's parts orders.
The retailer expects a reduction in costs of about 30%.
Other Top 100 retailers using the parts management service include Jordan's Furniture, El Dorado and Bob's Discount Furniture.
