Klein to succeed Kahn at Macy's East
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 8, 2004
NEW YORK — In a move that surprised the retail and manufacturer community, Federated Department Stores said last week that Hal Kahn, the top executive at Macy's East, will step down Feb. 15 and will be succeeded by Ron Klein.
Kahn, 58, has been chairman and CEO of the $5 billion Macy's East, the largest Federated division, since 1994.
Klein has been chairman of Federated's Atlanta-based division, Rich's/Goldsmith's/Lazarus, since July 2001. A longtime Federated executive, Klein temporarily served as executive vice chairman of Macy's East in early 2001, after two years as chairman of Federated's now-closed Stern's division.
Klein will work with Jim Gray, who has been president of Macy's East since 1994 and who will play a significant role in the new Macy's Home Store organization.
In other executive changes, Federated named Michael Krauter, who has been executive vice president/stores at the Atlanta division, to the new position of president and chief merchandising officer at the division. Before his Rich's assignment, Krauter had been general merchandise manager for home at Macy's West.
David Nichols will remain president and chief operating officer at the Atlanta division. Both Krauter and Nichols report to Sue Kronick, vice chair for all department store operations.
Klein will not be replaced. Eric Salus, who has been named president of the new Macy's Home Division, also will not be replaced as president of Bon-Macy's in Seattle, a post he had held since May 2003.
