Pa. House stops shipping some New Standards DR
Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, February 8, 2004
LEWISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania House has stopped shipping several dining pieces from New Standards, a hit introduction from the April 2003 High Point market, because of early veneer checking and construction problems on some chairs.
The good news is that the problems arose quickly enough after floor samples arrived at dealers in December that the product didn't have time to reach consumers, said Pennsylvania House President Michael Foster.
"Mahogany veneer checks over time, but we heard from several retailers that were experiencing problems after a couple of weeks on the floor," Foster said. "We decided the right thing to do was stop shipment."
Pennsylvania House is re-engineering the recalled dining room pieces and expects to show dealers new production pieces at the April High Point market.
"New Standards has 90 SKUs, and we're having problems with 10," Foster said. "The breadth of the line is continuing to retail despite the problems with some of the dining room pieces."
The products in question, all sourced in China, include: cabriole-leg, double-pedestal and 60-inch round dining tables; the formal china, ribbon-back chairs, demilune buffet, and crotch-mahogany sideboard. Dealers were asked to destroy the ribbon-back chairs, which showed potential for breaking.
"The dealers are getting 100% credit on their floor samples, so they have no exposure here," Foster said. "We didn't have 100% failure on these items, but we didn't want to chance them reaching consumers."
Some retailers decided to keep floor samples so they could take orders in anticipation of the corrected products, while advising consumers the furniture would be delivered after April.
