WHITBY, Ontario — Sam Sklar, one of four brothers who built what is today upholstery maker Sklar Peppler Furniture here, has died after a long illness. He was 85.
He joined the company founded by his eldest brother Harry after serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England during World War II.
He led the company's sales and marketing efforts and became chairman of the board, retiring in the mid-1980s after the company was sold to PCL Inds.
Sklar, along with brothers Harry, Joe and Lou, received the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn.'s Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year for contributions to the industry.
In addition to his brothers, he is survived by his wife, Lucy, and his stepdaughter, Denise. Daughter Catherine preceeded him in death.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
