Roomful Express still growing
By Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, February 15, 2004
WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Roomful Express continues its aggressive move to update and expand its stores.
The Top 100 chain is retrofitting a former Phar-Mor store here to create a 65,000-square-foot full-line furniture store consistent with the Connie Post-designed stores that the company has been opening since early last year. This will be the fourth updated store for the company, which operated as Freight Liquidators just a few years ago.
Scheduled to open in June, the store will serve the South Hills section of Pittsburgh, replacing an older and smaller unit.
"The West Mifflin location will almost double the size of our existing store in the area," said Jack McGowan, chief executive officer. "We'll now be able to offer our South Hills customers an expanded selection of furniture, bedding and accessories in a comfortable and open 'shop-by-the-roomful' environment that is our trademark."
In addition to room packages, the new stores carry the Connie Post decorative accessory packages that include wall décor, lighting, floral arrangements, tabletop and area rugs to complete vignettes and to generate add-on sales.
"We've taken the guesswork out of home decorating by giving customers a stress-free, no-hassle experience that combines furnishings and accessories in an easy and comfortable shopping setting — and all in professionally coordinated color and design selections," said Michael Kuhn, president and owner of Roomful Express.
Since September 2002, the retailer has opened new stores near Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca, at The Pointe at North Fayette and in Monroeville. With wider selection and a design that targets women shoppers, the company has added 200 new employees and has doubled its sales in four years. It projects sales will top $72 million this year, up from about $61 million in 2003.
McGowan said the company, which also has stores in the Johnstown, Pa., and Wheeling, W.Va., markets as well as in the Pittsburgh area, has set a sales goal of $100 million by 2008.
