Unifi helps send school supplies to Iraq

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 15, 2004

Unifi, a supplier of yarn used in upholstery fabric, led an effort to collect 10 tons of school supplies to help more than 6,100 students and their teachers in 17 schools in Baghdad, Iraq.

Mike Delaney, vice president of commercial operations at Unifi, created Operation: Education after hearing about the positive community response generated by U.S. soldiers' work with schools in Baghdad.

"Unifi agreed to help and we asked what was needed," said Delaney. "We didn't anticipate the magnitude of the need, but we never backed down from the commitment to help. Our challenge seemed small compared to the challenge our soldiers and the children are facing every day.

"The response to Operation: Education has been tremendous. We've received donations from all corners of the United States and as far away as Germany," he said.

U.S. soldiers planned to volunteer their time to distribute the items.

"The need extends well beyond the 17 schools initially identified," Delaney said. "We will continue collecting donations and work to expand the reach of Operation: Education to more schools."
