Cooking up sales in the kitchen
Cabinets, islands and carts blend style and function
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 15, 2004
HIGHPOINT — HIGHPOINT —Kitchen carts, islands, mobile carts and cabinets are enjoying a nice rally for ready-to-sell vendors and retailers.
Across several channels of distribution, kitchen storage and work surfaces are performing well as consumers seek stylish and functional solutions at reasonable prices.
Available as simple RTA carts or in more elaborate structures, ready-to-sell kitchen items are currently sold through channels such as discounters, catalogs, department stores and warehouse clubs.
Because the kitchen business has been brisk, everybody — from importers to major RTA houses — has been updating kitchen programs, redesigning and expanding their lines of work islands, work centers, carts, hutches and etageres.
And today's kitchen storage pieces and workstations are a far cry from the RTA microwave carts of yore. For example, many new designs incorporate eye-catching surfaces.
"The hottest thing for us is granite," said Jim Ziozis, president of Linon Home. "Stainless seems to have run its course, and granite is the look everyone wants."
Much of the new product also is mobile, often with locking, heavy-duty casters that serve as something of an industrial style statement.
