Bob's charitable efforts grow with retailer's expansion

MANCHESTER, Conn. — As Bob's Discount Furniture expands, its charitable efforts and recognition for them are keeping pace.
In recent weeks, the American Red Cross gave its highest honor to Bob's and its high-profile president, Bob Kaufman, for a multi-store blood drive that yielded more than 4,000 pints in a 12-month period.
The Connecticut Retail Merchants Assn. named Bob's its Retailer of the Year for 2003, in part recognizing the company's participation in charities and its commitment to the state.
Kaufman received the 2003 Youth Advocate Award by Easter Seals Connecticut for his support of young people with special needs, including hosting a summer camp.
Bob's also was one of five Connecticut businesses to receive the Nutmeg Big Brother Big Sister President's Award for its longtime support of the group.
Next month, Kaufman will receive the Hunger for Hope Award from Foodshare in Connecticut for a food drive at its stores last year that netted about 5,000 pounds of food.
Kaufman gives much of the credit for the recent honors to Cathy Poulin, Bob's public relations director, who has been with the company for years but came on full-time last summer and has initiated several new community outreach programs. (She also stars alongside Kaufman in many of Bob's television commercials.)
But giving back to the communities it does business in always has been important for Bob's. Since it inception about eight years ago, the Bob's Discount Furniture Charitable Fund, which supports programs with an emphasis on youth outreach, has given more than $1 million to the community.
