Ikea initiates remodel of Elizabeth, N.J., store

Room settings and interiors will be refreshed

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 4, 2009

ELIZABETH, N.J. — Swedish home furnishings giant Ikea has begun a comprehensive remodel of its first major U.S. store here to bring it up to speed with its other newer locations in the New York and New Jersey.

The work going on in phases through April 2010 will include reconstruction of interior and partition walls, racking, and refurbishing of equipment and systems. Room settings and model home interiors will be refreshed. Pathways will be re-routed slightly for better flow and the store's Marketplace area of home accents will be overhauled and expanded.

"While we continuously refresh our inspirational room settings and displays, this sizable investment will allow us to make significant and structural changes throughout the store so our customers have the best Ikea experience possible," said Bob Kay, manager of the 352,000-square-foot store.

Ikea said the store will remain open during the remodel and it expects to accomplish the improvements with limited disruption. However, there will be temporary inconveniences, including limited or no access to its Bistro and Swedish Foodmarket during the overhaul. And kitchen cabinets and appliances will not be available for same-day delivery until the work is complete, the company said.

Ikea's Elizabeth store opened in 1990 and was expanded by 80,000 square feet in 1998.

Ikea's other stores in the area are in Paramus, N.J., and Hicksville and Brooklyn, N.Y. The company operates 290 stores in 36 countries, including 36 in the United States.
