Flexsteel launches environmental initiative
Will manage resources, conserve energy
Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, March 12, 2009
DUBUQUE, Iowa — Flexsteel Inds. and its DMI Furniture subsidiaries have announced a long-term, companywide initiative to become more environmentally friendly.
The company said it will take part in Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture (EFEC), a voluntary program for manufacturers developed by the American Home Furnishings Alliance.
EFEC is designed to serve as a platform for continuous environmental improvement through means such as resource management and energy conservation, while reducing a company's environmental impact.
"The conclusion was easy to reach that we do have a responsibility to our environment and must work toward minimizing our environmental footprint at our facilities, work with our suppliers on utilization of eco-friendly and sustainable materials, and develop processes to measure our effectiveness and communicate our stewardship to our customers and consumers," said Ron Klosterman, president and CEO.
He added, "We will see many benefits from our efforts, including energy conservation, expanding recycling, waste reduction, etc. But most of all, this is the right thing to do for our environment, for our associates and for our families."
Seven locations around the country, including the Flexsteel and DMI corporate headquarters, are participating in the program, which according to the company, makes Flexsteel the largest organization to attempt EFEC certification. Teams have been assembled at each location to implement the program as it fits the needs of the facility and the community.
The company said its goal is not to achieve certification in the shortest amount of time, but to thoroughly evaluate each facility and implement changes that will support the long-term goals of the company.
Goals will include expansion of recycling programs and reducing waste, water consumption and energy usage while increasing the use of recycled materials in operations and product development. A Web site dedicated to the company's environmental commitment has been established for consumers at www.flexsteel.com/environment.
