ALEXANDRIA, Va. — More bad news for the bedding industry: Unit sales plunged by almost 19% in January.
The latest report from the International Sleep Products Assn. revealed that the industry's downward slide has continued into the new year.
ISPA's Bedding Barometer reported that units declined by 18.5% in January, while the dollar value of bedding shipments dropped by 16.4%. The average unit selling price, however, posted a 2.6% increase.
The extent of the dollar decline in January was similar to that reported in December, when dollars were down by 16.6%. But the unit decline was worse than in December, when units were off by 13%.
The Bedding Barometer provides a snapshot of wholesale bedding activity. The 18 U.S. producers who contribute to the report represent 45.9% of the industry's total unit shipments and 58.1% of the dollar value of those shipments, according to ISPA.
The bedding industry's trade association has added a qualifier to its monthly Bedding Barometer reports. It states: “Comparing Bedding Barometer reports to different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions and other factors.”
