Mississippi House backs aid for furniture makers
Bill would provide tax breaks for jobs
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 18, 2009
JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday to help upholstered furniture manufacturers, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported today.
The bill, passed unanimously, would provide a $2,000 tax break for each cut-and-sew job. Legislators said that is the type of job that has been shifted overseas.
"We think this bill is a great measure that will prop up the industry ... and bring some of those jobs back," the paper quoted House Speaker Billy McCoy as saying.
The tax incentives are aimed mostly at manufacturers in northeast Mississippi, where most of the state's upholstery jobs are located.
