Ed Tashjian leaves Century Furniture marketing post
Job eliminated as company adjusts staffing
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, March 23, 2009
HICKORY, N.C. — Ed Tashjian, vice president of marketing for Century Furniture, has left the high-end furniture manufacturer because his job was eliminated.
Century cut the post "due to poor economic conditions and reduced spending in the marketing area," said Tashjian, who left Friday. He had been with the company for about 11 years.
Century President and CEO Alex Shuford said today that the company has cut some positions since this past fall, adjusting its staffing for the weak economic climate. He said he thinks the world of Tashjian. "We're going to miss him."
Century is still working out details on how Tashjian's duties will be covered, but some will now fall to Chief Customer Officer Bob Johnson.
"We've seen some decreases in incoming orders like everybody else, and we think this is not going to be just a little bump in the road," Shuford said. "We're just trying to size our business to what I see coming over the next year or so."
Tashjian said he knows the decision was "gut wrenching" for Shuford, but something he had to do.
"The truth of the matter is for every senior level management position you can go without, you can save five or six factory jobs," said Tashjian.
He said his departure was amicable and that he continues to have "the highest respect and admiration for the company, its products and the Shuford family."
A 20-year industry veteran, Tashjian said he hopes to remain in the furniture business.
Shuford said he hopes Tashjian considers starting a marketing, advertising or public relations firm "because he has lots of talent and knowledge we'd love to take advantage of in the future."
