HIGH POINT — Antiques by Zaar, an importer of refurbished antique Chinese furniture and accessories, has relocated its operations from New Gloucester, Maine, to High Point.

It occupies a 12,000-square-foot facility here that includes warehousing, offices and a trade showroom.
"North Carolina will be a much better location from which to operate," said Ruth Olbrych, who co-founded Antiques by Zaar in 1999 with her husband, Mark. "Storing our product will be easier than in Maine, and there are so many more shipping options in North Carolina."
Antiques by Zaar's line features 800 to 1,000 pieces in 24 product categories, including cabinets, sideboards, tables, dressers, desks, bookcases and trunks. The company sells to the trade as well as directly to consumers worldwide through its Web site at www.antiquesbyzaar.com.
At next month's High Point Market, the company will show for the first time in the International Home Furnishings Center's Pavilion on 3 area. Its warehouse and trade showroom — a three-mile ride on the Go Anywhere Shuttle route — also will be open for business during the market by appointment.
The company had been showing in Market Square and the Suites at Market Square.
"We think the Pavilion will be a good fit for us," said Olbrych. "We expect to attract some new customers."
She said target customers include antique, specialty and independent furniture stores. "Our product really stands out when it's displayed in a conventional furniture store," she said. "It provides an attention-getter that also sells."
Antiques by Zaar also is part of the High Point Design Center, which promotes year-round business to the trade. The company's High Point facility is open the first Wednesday of every month, along with 40 other vendors in the area, and also by appointment. The showroom is staffed by Jeff Moore, who handles North Carolina sales for Antiques by Zaar.
Recent inclusion in an article in the October 2008 issue of Traditional Home, called "It's Good to be Ching," has created new awareness about the company and its products, according to Olbrych. She added that the company's Web site, and new Twitter, Facebook and blog initiatives are also helping to spread the word.
"We're creating an ongoing relationship with our customers — both dealers and consumers," she said. "We have a very loyal base, and they like having the opportunity to learn more about us and our products."
Antiques by Zaar's new High Point operations center is at 400 Mandustry St.
