Philip Cutler, consultant to Asian manufacturers
Staff -- Furniture Today, March 30, 2009
New York — Philip Cutler, a longtime consultant to furniture manufacturers in the Philippines, China and elsewhere in Asia, has died. He was 84.
Cutler worked in retail at Macy's and then Lord & Taylor until the 1980s. He then became an independent consultant and was influential in helping Asian manufacturers develop products for Western markets. He was semi-retired at the time of his death.
International consultant Conrad Capaccio, a colleague of Cutler's, recalled traveling with him to the Philippines, where Cutler would speak and show slides of furniture to help manufacturers target their products to appeal to American and European consumers. But Cutler's work didn't stop in the meeting room, said Capaccio. "He would help develop the piece right there in the factory with the factory owner."
According to a death notice posted in the New York Times, Cutler and his friend Santiago Cortes also enjoyed traveling to India, Peru, Egypt, Jordan, Cuba, Vietnam and Thailand.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Yorkers for Parks, 355 Lexington Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017, or to the charity of one's choice.
