Mega Group meeting aims to help retailers 'Break Out'

Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, March 30, 2009

"Break Out!" will be the theme for Mega Group's annual general meeting and conference, set for April 16–18 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.

"We are all living with the insecurities that our customers are facing," Mega President and CEO Benoit Simard said in his invitation to members and suppliers. "However, this can also be seen as an opportunity to review your business practices, your company's image, operations and perhaps do a little 'clean-up' to emphasize your company's greatest assets. This review can allow you to become an indispensable retailer within your region."

The conference will focus on presenting a few key elements to assist members in their "rejuvenation" process.

Mega members also will be able to meet with key suppliers and Mega's merchandising team.

Highlighting the event will be presentations on two new Internet-based initiatives, BrandSource.ca and Mega's new Web portal, which has been upgraded to increase the standards and quantity of information available to members and to offer easier and quicker access.

A supplier trade fair will feature a range of new product ready for shipping, including show specials.

Each of Mega's merchandising sub-groups will hold meetings, and the organization will hold board elections.

A series of social events are also planned, including a welcome reception, tours for spouses, a golf tournament and the closing gala on the Saturday evening.

A keynote speaker at the conference will be Sean Wise, a columnist and management school faculty member described as one of Canada's "foremost mentors of high growth CEOs." In a note to Mega members, he said that "every obstacle is an opportunity in disguise, especially for businesses and organizations who know how to turn a downturn into a windfall."

Pierre Gauthier, an industrial psychologist, will discuss how retail store owners can prepare themselves to hand over their businesses to the next generation and look forward to retirement.

Both presentations will be given in English and repeated later in French.
