IFDA members walk to raise funds for education

Will support scholarships, grants

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 1, 2009

NEW YORK — More than a dozen chapters of the International Furnishings & Design Assn. are holding walks this spring to raise money for the IFDA Educational Foundation.

The collected funds will support the numerous scholarships and grants the foundation awards. IFDA expects to see a boost in scholarship applicants this year because of the weak economy.

In High Point, Carolinas Chapter members will walk this Saturday, April 4. The previous evening, the event will kick off with a garden party at the High Point home of designer Raymond Waites.

For other chapters, the Walk for Design Education events will take place on various days throughout the spring and will range from tours of design centers to hiking trails and walking through gardens. National Walk Partners are 3M on the Champion level; Benjamin Moore and Hunter Douglas on the Booster level; and Market Square/MMPI, EJ Victor and Technology Ventures on the Banner level.

The foundation plans to award a number of scholarships and grants this year, including the Green/Sustainable Scholarship. The deadlines to apply are March 31 for scholarships and June 30 for grants. For more information, visit www.ifdaef.org.

For walk information and registration, go to www.ifdaef.org/designwalk.

The Carolinas chapter's walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the 200 Steele building. The invitation-only party at Waites' home is scheduled for the evening of April 3.

"I am pleased to be involved with the IFDA/EF Walk for Design Education and its goal of helping to increase scholarships for talented students as well as grants in such areas as historic preservation and universal design," Waites said.

Bonnie Peterson, foundation chairwoman, thanked Waites for offering his home for the kickoff celebration. She said that because of the weak economy, funding the scholarships and grants takes on increased importance. "The needs are greater than ever before and we anticipate a high number of applications this year," said Peterson.

Local sponsors of the walk are 200 Steele, Diana Parrish Designs, Wayne Inds. and Hamilton Properties, who join national partners Benjamin Moore, E.J. Victor, Hunter Douglas, Market Square/MMPI and Technology Ventures.
