Kincaid Furniture achieves sustainability standard
AHFA program promotes improvement
Heath Combs -- Furniture Today, April 2, 2009
HIGH POINT — Kincaid Furniture has achieved Sustainable by Design registration from the American Home Furnishings Alliance.
Kincaid, a Hudson, N.C.-based La-Z-Boy division, evaluated its corporate footprint and global climate impact through the program, an AHFA press release said.
The case goods and upholstery supplier joins C.R. Laine, American Drew and Lea Inds. as manufacturers and importers that have attained the SBD status.
Kincaid established goals and a system for evaluating its annual targets and creating new goals in areas including supply chain management, emissions and its carbon footprint.
Kincaid's case goods operation in Lenior, N.C., and its upholstery operation in Taylorsville, N.C., completed the AHFA's environmental management system, called Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture or EFEC, in September. The voluntary program helps furniture companies pursue continuous environmental improvement.
Kincaid said that 87% of its domestic lumber is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and another 10% is from forests within the Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable Program.
Of the company's imported lumber for components, panels and dimension stock, 82% is FSC-certified.
