South Cone discussing sustainable wood use
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 21, 2004
AT THE MARKET — Case goods and occasional manufacturer South Cone is working to spread the word here about the importance of using sustainable woods in the manufacture of furniture.
The company will host an invitation-only event in its showroom this evening with representatives from the Rainforest Alliance, the Forest Stewardship Council and the Global Forest Program of the World Wildlife Fund. They will discuss their organizations' mission and the role the furniture industry can play in helping to manage and preserve forest resources around the world.
South Cone, Peru's largest exporter of wood furniture, has committed to the use of and development of sustainable wood resources. Its Giving Back program gives the indigenous people living in the forests incentives to promote sustainability, and the company uses certified sustainable woods in its products.
"Our ultimate goal in partnering with the Rainforest Alliance, Forest Stewardship Council and World Wildlife Fund is to promote sustainable use of wood resources until the practice becomes an industry-wide standard," said South Cone spokesperson Einar Elsner.
He said those groups' programs "are pro-business, driven as much by the profit motive as by science, basic principles of management, pragmatic solutions to pressing environmental problems, and a desire to do what's right."
South Cone shows in Union Square, space E501.
