ISPA spotlights its revised, 8-point ethics code

David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 18, 2004

Ethics is a hot topic in the business world these days, and the International Sleep Products Assn. took a high-profile approach to the subject at its Expo 2004 here.

ISPA, the bedding industry's leading trade association and based in Alexandria, Va., devoted much of the back page of its program and exhibitor guide to its Code of Ethics.

Dick Doyle, ISPA's president, said the entire business community is putting more focus on ethics, and said ISPA is doing its part.

Last year, ISPA revised its long-standing Code of Ethics, which covers eight points. It addresses a wide range of industry practices, calling on producers to conduct themselves in ways that will reflect positively on the industry.

And don't even think about spreading misinformation about the competition. The code of ethics says producers should not do that.

The code begins with a summary of the role the bedding industry plays in society.

"People spend a third of their lives in bed, and the mattress industry serves society in its contributions to the public's health and well-being," the code states. "We dedicate ourselves, as members of ISPA, to accepting the responsibility of this service. We pledge ourselves individually and collectively to abide by the following Industry Code of Ethics and will:

  • "Dedicate ourselves to improving public health and well-being through the education of consumers about the importance of a good mattress to a good night's sleep and good health.

  • "Seek to address common issues of industry concern through ISPA by cooperating in every reasonable and lawful manner with other members of our industry for the betterment of the mattress industry and sharing our time, resources, experience and insights.

  • "Conduct our business in a manner that will encourage the public, media and government policy makers to view the mattress industry in a positive light, and avoid practices that might cause the industry adverse notoriety or bring it into disrepute.

  • "Maintain truthfulness and accuracy in labeling and advertising our products and services.

  • "Compete with other mattress manufacturers on an honorable and fair basis and make no false statements or misrepresentations concerning one another.

  • "Deal fairly and honestly with both our suppliers and our customers.

  • "Respect and promote the interests of our employees and observe carefully all laws pertaining to their employment, health, welfare and safety.

  • "Observe all laws and regulations governing the conduct of our business, including applicable consumer product safety requirements."
