Indianapolis praised as Expo venue
David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 18, 2004
INDIANAPOLIS — The record-setting Expo 2004 held here has some bedding executives saying the event should return to this Midwestern city.
The spacious convention facilities and the abundance of hotels and restaurants nearby impressed veteran convention-goers. Three major hotels are connected to the Indiana Convention Center, site of the ISPA Expo, with covered walkways.
It didn't rain enough during the four-day Expo to make those walkways critical, but they did make it easy for attendees to move back and forth between their hotels and the show floor.
Downtown Indianapolis offers a clean, compact collection of hotels, restaurants, businesses, museums and sports facilities, in addition to the convention facilities. The RCA Dome, home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, is directly behind the Indiana Convention Center. And Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers and the WNBA's Indiana Fever, is only three blocks away.
ISPA doesn't mind revisiting the site of successful shows. The next Expo, set for March 1-4, 2006, will be in San Antonio, a popular ISPA venue.
After that, ISPA will be heading to Baltimore for the 2008 Expo. Its dates are March 12-15.
The Expos are held every other year, alternating with the Interzum show in Cologne, Germany. The next edition of Interzum is scheduled for April 29-May 3, 2005.
The next major ISPA event is the Industry Conference. It will be held Sept. 8-10 this fall at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington.
ISPA President Dick Doyle said it is appropriate to meet in Washington since this is an election year.
