Flammability expert provides Expo briefings
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 18, 2004
INDIANAPOLIS — At its last Expo show before the onset of stringent new open-flame mattress flammability standards in California, the International Sleep Products Assn. added flammability sessions to its program.
A late addition to the agenda was a series of informal briefings on mattress flammability issues at the state and federal levels. The briefings, offered free of charge, were provided by Gordon Damant, a technical consultant to ISPA's Sleep Products Safety Council and one of the world's leading authorities on flammability.
Mike Hammer, president of Shifman Mattress Co. in Newark, N.J., was among those who were pleased to see the briefings added to the show's program. He devoted a significant portion of his time at the ISPA show meeting with suppliers of fire-resistant products and learning more about flammability issues.
At the show, ISPA said it is going to hold two additional flammability forums, following up on the sold-out success of a series of four ISPA Flammability Shoptalk seminars held in February in California, Illinois and North Carolina.
In May, ISPA said it will be providing audio Web casts based on presentations at the original Shoptalk sessions. Selected audio presentations with flammability experts and accompanying slides will be provided on the ISPA Web site.
And ISPA is planning to hold an audio conference in June, where members can take part on their own or in a group from their company. The live audio conference will give members a chance to ask questions of a panel of experts.
The two additional forums are being provided due to strong demand for the information, ISPA said.
The Shoptalk sessions held in February received positive reviews from attendees. Furniture/Today provided four pages of coverage of the session held at Northbrook, Ill., in its Feb. 23 issue.
"The Shoptalk workshop I attended in Northbrook, Ill., was a great seminar," said Paul Terronez of Kolcraft Enterprises. "The information I received from the workshop was very informative. I found the suppliers' presentations to be particularly helpful, as I truly learned some mattress construction techniques I had not realized before."
Tim Enright of Estee Bedding said, "Prior to the workshop, the flammability issue and details regarding TB 603 (the new California flammability standard) were rather cloudy. The seminar provided a clear picture of all the specifics."
