Bekaert to expand N.C. plant

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Mattress ticking supplier Bekaert Textiles USA is expanding its plant here.
The company, part of Belgium-based Bekaert Textiles, will add about 100,000 square feet in two phases and will increase employment by 40 to 50 over the next three years. It opened the plant in 1999 and currently employs more than 100 people.
Bekaert will invest nearly $12 million in construction and equipment. The City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County approved economic development grants that will assist Bekaert with the expansion. Construction will begin this spring.
"We have been working to make this expansion happen for quite a while, and we're delighted that we can begin moving forward," said Dirk Vandeplancke, president of Bekaert Textiles USA.
Scott Nelles, vice president of sales, said the expansion shows the company's business strategy is effective. "We've gained market share," he said. "Our customized approach is working."
Bekaert is in the Union Cross Business Park, where it was the first tenant.
Globally, Bekaert employs more than 1,700 people at facilities in eight countries. Bekaert is part of Gamma Holding BV, a diversified global textile company based in the Netherlands.
