In light of the incredible waves of change that have swept over our industry during the past year, it's not surprising to hear analysts from just about every business sector in this country agree on one thing: We, my friends, are navigating in uncharted waters.
With that in mind, information that can help guide us through these turbulent waters is priceless.
Right now, everyone — suppliers and retailers alike — are trying to anticipate the consumer's appetite for specific home furnishings categories.
For example, when consumers come into the store searching for casual dining, what's really important to them?
How important is construction? Where does the issue of quality rank with shoppers? What about style, price, comfort or the reputation of the supplier or brand being considered?

To get the big picture, we questioned thousands of consumers via an online survey that was linked to the January 2009 Ideas newsletter from HGTV.
The response was incredible. The survey that you will find in the April 25 issue is based on the input of just under 5,000 U.S. consumers. Because of that large sample size, the survey data can be projected to the nation's population with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.4%.
